I think he does this to emphasize on how much it affected him that such young people (even people around our age) were attacking villages in order to protect their families. It's sad when it has to go that far, and it shows how badly the younger people treated others and were treated.

I really agree when you said "it's sad when it has to go that far" I wish those younger kids can live better life, and stop killing people.
